still swollen gums

I've been gone for a bit. I had a pretty nasty cold (I'm still recovering slowly) and I've been busy at school with state mandated testing stuff and choral contest coming up. Yikes.

So, the gums aren't really better. I called last week and asked what I should do, and they told me to wait it out and see if it gets worse. Of course, it got worse so I made an appointment for this afternoon. They were located at the office that's furthest away from my house, but I went anyway, ended up waiting for 45 minutes after my appointment time, and then the orthodontist barely looked at me before telling me I was worrying about nothing.

Now, this is unusual. I love my orthodontists. I had a rotten end to my day at school, so I was feeling a little sensitive, and I hit traffic on the way to the appointment and freaked out about being late (remember the first braces fiasco? now I'm paranoid about being late to an appointment).

The reason, he tells me, is that my swelling is due to my tooth pushing forward into line - and pushing all of that extra gum tissue with it. He says to clean my best, but that "I haven't seen swelling yet." What does that mean?

To put it lightly, argh, I am not satisfied.

Oh ha! I reckon they should at least pretend to take a good look and perhaps "hmmm" a bit like they're considering.

Can we see pics? I'm all curious now ...

Sorry to hear about your gum drama Steph. Ya know, when I first had my braces put on I remember having some funky stuff happen to my gums as well. In some places they were turning white! I thought for sure that they were falling off. hahaha I talked to my ortho about it and he said it's perfectly normal. It's just thier way of showing you that they're not happy with all the shifting and poking. :D

Hi! My name is Kelly Smith. I too am 25 with braces. I've had mine for 15 months now and will hopefully get them off within the next 9. Anyways... I was also having a bit of a problem with my gums (just swelling around the ones that are moving) and was wondering what I could do about it. Do you also get "What grade are you in?" Yeah... I get that a lot or "You're not 25!" I do look young but the braces dont help! Good Luck with your braces and celebrate when they come off! :)

maybe you should rinse with saltwater?

I hope your cold is gone now, and that your gums feel better soon. =) If it is any consolation, my gums get inflamed from time to time... always in a different spot. I get worried about it for a few days... and then it's gone before I know it.... and back in a new weird spot! These braces sure do make our mouths feel unusual.

Ahhh. The never-ending frustration of "Your one mouth vs. The doc's seeing gazoodles of mouths". I think every one of the buggers should have to wear braces as a constant reminder of how real/new this is to each of the sufferers as individuals!! Sure hope the gums are laying off for you by now.

Feel free to disregard, but I second Nabukay's suggestion of salt-water swishing. Soothing. Ahhhh. That and-I know it's another expense, but- I 've joined the worshipers at the alter of Water-Pik. I can brush/rinse/floss repeat...and STILL blast stuff out of stubborn spaces with this evolutionary water-torture device. I rationalize that it should come in handy post-surgery (eventually) as well, so made sure it had the adjustable settings. Just a thought :)
